Spring temperatures in Kamloops vary a lot. Check the morning forecast and dress for the low, not the high. A warm afternoon does not mean the morning started warm.
Not permitted — safety concerns
Camouflage clothing — makes children hard to spot in the forest
Clothing or shoes that are too big — loose gear is a safety hazard
Your child will need to wear
01
Base layer — top and bottom
Wool, silk, or dense polyester. Spring mornings can be cold and the forest stays cool longer than the open park. This layer is still worth it in April and May.
Good options: Stripes, Mountain Warehouse, MEC, Patagonia Capilene
02
Sturdy shoes or boots — no sandals and no gumboots
A well-fitting running shoe with a wool sock works well in spring. Waterproof boots are the better choice through April when ground is still wet. No gumboots — they fill with mud and slip off.
Favorites: Muck boots from the Horse Barn
03
Backpack with a chest clip
No wider or taller than your child's torso. Look for 10 to 18 litre capacity.
04
Shell pants and coat — separate pieces preferred
Kamloops is a desert so a heavy rainsuit is not needed for spring. A lightweight shell is enough for most spring days. Separate pieces are more versatile than a one-piece.
Good options: MEC rain pants, Paradox (available at Costco)
05
Socks — wool or wool blend
A good sock makes a real difference in spring when feet are getting wet. Wool stays warm even when damp. Send a spare pair in the bag.
Smartwool and Kombi available at SportChek and Atmosphere
06
Sun hat — must cover the ears and stay in place
As we move into May, sun protection matters. Baseball caps do not cover sensitive ears. Avoid very floppy sun hats that fall over the eyes or blow off in the wind. A wide-brimmed hat that fits securely is ideal.
